Natural Sleep Supplements

We all know sleep is so important for optimal health. In the last few years, researchers, doctors, and journalists have learned more than ever before about the role it plays in our lives. Lack of sleep has become such an issue that the CDC now considers it a public health problem! I have compiled a list of alternation and natural supplements that I have found to work.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile is known to reduce stress, anxiety and support restful sleep. The flavonoid found in chamomile binds with the brain receptors and acts as a mild tranquilizer which eases you into a restful slumber. Sip on this organic chamomile tea before bed.

Valerian Root

This is an ancient old herb that has been used for centuries to treat anxiety and insomnia. It is very helpful for calming feelings of anxiety, which relaxes the mind and promotes drowsiness. It is a popular natural sleep aid due to its calming effect on the nervous system. This is a great brand that is free from melatonin.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a natural hormone made by the body, often called the sleep hormone which helps to regulate sleep cycles. Taking one capsule at bedtime can easily help you drift into a restful sleep. Keep in mind that it is important to have the lights off because light suppresses melatonin production. I love using these melatonin patches!

Magnesium

Many people suffer from low magnesium levels which can result in sleepless nights. Since magnesium is not produced by the body, one should add it through diet or supplements. Magnesium promotes relaxation and restful sleep. A healthy dose of magnesium may help relax your muscles and mind, which can help you fall asleep more easily. I personally use and love this Calm drink.

L-Tryptophan

You’ve probably heard the that the reason you get sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner is because turkey is high in tryptophan. L-tryptophan (the full name) is an amino acid that’s found in foods like turkey, chicken, meat, cheese, yogurt, eggs, and fish. Your body uses tryptophan and turns it into a B vitamin called niacin. Niacin plays a key role in creating serotonin, a neurotransmitter that’s associated with sleep

CBD

CBD has spread like wildfire in the last couple years. I personally love and use CBD for different reasons but CBD is especially helpful before bed. CBD comes from the hemp plant but unlike THC, CBD does not make a person feel “stoned” or intoxicated, but relaxed. Check out my post on CBD.

Lavender

The soothing scent is believed to support better sleep. I wouldn’t suggest taking it in a pill form but rather as an aromatherapy. Studies have showed that smelling lavender for 30 minutes before sleep may be enough to improve sleep quality. Try this awesome lavender rub if you are not into essential oils!

Nedi’s Tip: Not a supplement, but if you decrease caffeine consumption and stay away from screens and exercise an hour before you go to bed, the decrease in stimulation may help you fall sleep faster.
