PCOS is a common endocrine disorder that affects close to 10% of women at childbearing age. PCOS can cause the ovaries to develop small collections of fluid called follicles and fail to release eggs regularly. When a woman has PCOS, she may experience prolonged or infrequent periods which can lead to infertility. Other symptoms of PCOS include weight gain, mood swings, bloating, and leaky gut. Experts are not sure exactly what causes PCOS, but improper dieting habits, stress, and insulin resistance are all contributing factors.

Tips for Women with PCOS

Exercise Regularly 

Exercise helps to maintain a healthy weight which regulates menstrual periods. Regular cardio and strength training can also help your body respond better to insulin which lowers the risk of diabetes in PCOS patients. Women with PCOS are more likely to experience depression which can be managed through the release of endorphins in the body when you exercise. Yoga and Pilates can be great for those with PCOS because they can be practiced for longer durations than higher-impact workouts.

Cinnamon 

Studies have shown that Cinnamon consumption can reduce insulin resistance significantly, which is one of the causes of PCOS. Cinnamon can help to regulate the menstrual cycle in women with PCOS. Try drinking hot water with cinnamon, honey, and lemon in the morning to help alleviate your PCOS symptoms. Cinnamon can also be added to tea or smoothies.

Pineapple 

Pineapples contain large amounts of an enzyme called bromelain. Bromelain can act as a natural pain reliever and an anti-inflammatory agent. The sweet taste of pineapple also works to curb intense sugar cravings that are common with PCOS. Pineapple also contains manganese, which is a nutrient that helps prevent PMS symptoms and potassium, which can fight bloating. 

High Fiber Foods

High fiber foods slow down digestion which reduces the impact of sugar in the blood and helps reduce insulin resistance in women with PCOS. Some high fiber foods include almonds, peppers, sprouts, sweet potatoes, and lentils.

Take a Daily Probiotic

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for you and your digestive system. These tiny organisms promote healthy weight and metabolism, and they reduce internal inflammation. People with PCOS suffer from chronic inflammation which causes several complications in the body, including insulin resistance and weight gain. Taking daily Probiotics can help alleviate this inflammation and some of your PCOS symptoms.

This treatment has been found to regulate menstrual cycles and lower testosterone levels in PCOS patients.
