Hot summer days are the perfect time to get in some extra doses of fresh and juicy fruits. But, not all fruit is created equal. Here are 6 of my favorites that are not only delicious, but also provide exceptional health benefits.
Blueberries – blueberries are an antioxidant powerhouse. Due to their high levels of antioxidants, they are one of the best fruits to eat to prevent premature aging. They help lower cholesterol and can fight against inflammation. Blueberries can be added to pancakes, smoothies or desserts.
Watermelon – apart from being the quintessential summer fruit, watermelon is packed with health benefits. It has been shown to improve heart health, decrease bloating, improve eyesight, support weight loss and also acts as an anti-inflammatory. I like to blend a couple of slices of watermelon and ice in my blender and drink it by the pool or make popsicles for a hot summer day.
Tomatoes – t
omatoes contain the powerful antioxidant lycopene, which has a long list of healthy benefits. It protects the skin against the strong sun rays, slows arterial aging, fights heart disease, stroke, memory loss and impotence. Tomatoes are a great healthy addition to light summer salads.
Figs – figs are an excellent source of polyphenols, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties as well as potassium, calcium and fiber (almost 2 grams each). They can be enjoyed as a snack on their own or as a topping to Greek yogurt or a cheese plate.
Avocados – (yes, avocados are a fruit!) avocados are a nutritional gem. They are a good source of fiber, potassium, Vitamins A, E & K and Monounsaturated Fats, which your body can easily burn for energy. Avocados are also known to reduce cholesterol and fight inflammation. They can be added to avocado toast,
salads or eaten on their own!
Kiwi – 1 cup of kiwi provides more potassium than the same amount of sliced bananas — with less sugar and calories! Kiwis are also high in Vitamin C and fiber, and quite low in sugar, making it a great fruit for those watching their summer figure. Try them on their own for breakfast or add to your favorite smoothie.
Watermelon is really good for health because it contains 99% of water.
